Get students interested in reading: easy and interesting books to read in the most desirable location

• Trips to the school library

• Reader’s Theater

• Write books with students

• Websites like Tar Heel Reader and Vooks

Selecting Books to Increase Print Processing

All readers, but especially emergent readers need books they can read independently to increase their print processing skills. An independent book is one where the student can read 98% of the text with ease on their own.

• Think high-interest, varied genre

• Think Goldilocks: “Just Right Books”

• Think independent/recreational reading level:

• If the student can’t read 98% of the words it is too hard!

• Demonstrate searching for a book; model thinking aloud while you search
