Fluency

What is it?

It is the ability to automatically or effortlessly read words in text with expressiveness (Prosody). Without the automaticity or reading words comprehension is compromised. It is not reading fast.

How do I teach it?

There are many ways to teach fluency

• Model Fluent Reading- access to short texts that are meant to be performed

  • poems

  • songs

  • segments of stories

  • short text

• Assisted Reading

  • Reading along while you read- choral reading

  • Turning captions on on videos, TV, You tube, etc.

  • Reading along with audio books

• Wide Reading Practice

  • read as much as possible

• Deep Reading Practice

  • Repeated readings, one time is never enough

  • Engaging the reading in performance

    • Poetry

    • Song Lyrics- google the song lyrics cut and paste them in a pdf and share with your students

    • Dialog

  • Focus on Phrasing

    • Great way to help with automaticity of high frequency words
