Alternative Learning/DCALS

ISD 917's Alternative Learning programs are called DCALS programs. DCALS stands for Dakota County Area Learning Schools.

WHO should attend DCALS?

Our DCALS programs are Minnesota State-Approved Alternative Programs designed to meet the needs of students who may not have found success in traditional school environments. While many of our students come from our nine member school districts, enrollment at DCALS is open to any student in Minnesota.  DCALS Main and North sites serve 10th-12th graders.

WHERE is DCALS located?

As of the 2022-2023 school year, DCALS will have two locations conveniently located in Dakota County.
DCALS Main -  1300 145th Street East, Rosemount, MN 55068 (in Dakota County Technical College)
DCALS North - 150 Marie Avenue East, West St. Paul, MN 55118
(**Our DCALS South site at 421 Walnut Street, Farmington, MN 55024 closed on 6/30/22.)

WHY would students want to attend DCALS?

DCALS has much smaller class sizes than most high schools, uses hands-on/experiential approaches to learning, and focuses on relationship-building in a positive, safe, and supportive learning environment.

Our academic calendar is designed to help students earn credits in the areas they need to at a pace that suits their needs.

Each student works with staff to develop a Continual Learning Plan designed to help them meet graduation requirements and create a path to the future.

DCALS offers seat-based, in-person programming as well as hybrid independent study programming that include both online and in-person programming.

HOW do students get to and from ISD 917 DCALS programs?

DCALS students are responsible for providing their own transportation to and from school.  Students who drive themselves have access to free parking in our shared parking lot with DCTC.  Students can also get dropped off at the east entrance of DCTC.
