Medical Careers Program Description: 1st Semester

Medical Careers is about preparing students to enter the healthcare world and also exploring different opportunities that are available to them.  It emphasizes the importance of professionalism, dependability, accountability and responsibility.  The Medical Careers Program at Dakota County Secondary Technical Center (DCALS) provides high school students the opportunity to learn about and explore specific health careers, such as what type of duties they would perform, education that is required, standards that need to be met and what salary is earned.  The students have the opportunity to take the American Heart Association (AHA) Healthcare Provider CPR and AHA Heartsaver First Aid class.  Upon the successful completion of CPR skills and written test, a certification will be issued that is valid for two years.

Nurse Assisting/Home Health Aide:  2nd Semester

This 97 hour course prepares students to assist dependent elderly persons, home-care clients and hospital patients with their personal care needs.  This course combines home health aide (HHA) content with the nursing assistant course.  The Minnesota State Certification examination is administered following course completion.  Nursing assistants and nursing assistants/registered (NA/R), provide care under the direct supervision of licensed nurses.  Employment is primarily in long-term care facilities, home health agencies and hospitals.  Upon completion of classroom and lab work qualified students will perform a 20 hour clinical rotation in a licensed care center with instructor supervision.  These hours are outside of school time and own transportation must be provided.
